Welcome to the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science homepage, we offer accredited programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology (CLT).

The CLS program consists of three years of pre-clinical study, including general education and supporting courses in chemistry and biological sciences. The fourth year of study constitutes the “upper division phase” of the program and includes specific courses in clinical laboratory sciences, such as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology and serology, body fluid analysis, microbiology and immunohematology (blood banking). During the senior year, the student completes a 20-week rotation in a clinical laboratory facility affiliated with the EKU program. Graduates of the program are eligible to take national examinations for certification as a clinical laboratory scientist (or medical technologist).

The CLT program consists of two years study, including general education and supporting courses in chemistry and biological sciences. The clinical phase includes specific courses in the clinical laboratory sciences, such as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology and serology, body fluid analysis, microbiology and immunohematology (blood banking). During the fourth semester, the student completes an 18-week rotation in a clinical laboratory facility affiliated with the EKU program. Graduates of the program are eligible to take national examinations for certifications as a clinical laboratory technician (or medical technician).

Clinical Laboratory Practice The Clinical Laboratory Scientist and Clinical Laboratory Technician perform laboratory tests on body fluids and tissues which aid in the diagnosis of disease and management of health. The scope of practice includes collection and processing of specimens, performance of a broad range of analytical procedures, quality control, and reporting of test results.
