Department of Medical Laboratory Science

Welcome to the Department of Medical Laboratory Science

(Formerly known as Clinical Laboratory Science - Change Effective Fall 2012)

Our department offers accredited programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree (BS) in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and an Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT).

The MLS program consists of four years of study. First two years (Pre-clinical study) include general education and supporting courses in chemistry and biological sciences. The third year of study constitutes the “upper division phase” of the program and includes specific courses in clinical laboratory science, such as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology and serology, body fluid analysis, microbiology and immunohematology (blood banking). During the fourth (senior) year, the student completes a 20-week clinical rotation in a hospital laboratory affiliated with the EKU program. Graduates of the program are eligible to take a national certification examination for clinical or medical laboratory scientist.

The MLT program consists of two years of study, including general education, supporting courses in chemistry and biological sciences and clinical courses. These clinical courses include hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology and serology, body fluid analysis, microbiology and immunohematology (blood banking). During the fourth semester, the student completes an 18-week rotation in a clinical laboratory facility affiliated with the EKU program. Graduates of the program are eligible to take a national certification examination for clinical or medical laboratory technician.
