Information
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Science offers an accredited program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS). The program consists of two years of pre-clinical study, including general education and supporting courses in chemistry and biological sciences. The third and fourth years of study constitute the upper division phase of the program and include specific courses in clinical laboratory sciences, such as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology and serology, analysis of body fluids, microbiology, and immunohematology (blood banking). During the senior year the student completes a 20-week rotation in a clinical laboratory facility affiliated with the EKU program. Graduates of the program are eligible to take national examinations for certification as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist. Another choice available to students in the baccalaureate degree program is the cytotechnology option. This includes a 12-month practicum at an accredited school of cytotechnology. Upon completion of general education and prerequisite courses, the student must seek admission to the school of cytotechnology for completion of degree requirements. The department provides assistance in the admission application process.
