The greatest number of clinical laboratory personnel are employed in hospital laboratories. These laboratories perform a wide variety of routine and special diagnostic tests, ranging from simple manual methods to those using automated and highly technological instrumentation, often linked with computer systems. In addition to hospitals, clinical laboratory scientists and technicians may be employed in physician's offices or clinics, regional reference laboratories, public health facilities, as research assistants, or in industrial quality control. There are also opportunities for positions as sales or technical representatives with companies that manufacture and/or distribute laboratory equipment and supplies.
